In the world of vehicle repair, where engines are mended and cars rejuvenated, there’s a vital aspect that often goes unnoticed – waste management. Every operation, from the routine task of swapping out oil filters and used lube to the more intricate process of body repair, generates a diverse array of waste materials. As one who has owned and operated a network of repair shops, I’ve come to understand that it’s more than just fixing cars. It’s about responsibility — to our customers, our communities, and the environment. Through trial and error, I’ve learned the art of turning what some might see as scrap into an opportunity for sustainability and even additional revenue. Following are some thoughts on waste management in the repair industry, combining passion with practicality.

#.	Scrap Type	Collection and Disposal Method	Scrap Sale
1	Waste Engine Oil	This is generated every time an oil change service is performed Number of liters of waste oil must approximately match the quantity of new oil consumed since last sale of waste oil. Quantity of waste oil collected may be 15-20% lesser than the quantity consumed due to loss during drainage and reduced collection from the vehicle itself Collect waste oil into the waste oil collection tanks When the oil collection tank is full, transfer to the 210L barrel Sell oil only to licensed waste oil collection agents and keep receipts of the sale Keep tanks / barrels sealed at all times and away from exposure to heat, fire and other flammable materials Sell waste oil only when the 210L barrel is full Avoid spillage of oil in the service or collection areas. In case of spillage, immediately clean up. Use saw dust around the base of the new and waste oil storage tanks. Saw dust absorbs the spilled oil and keeps the area clean and safe, without allowing the oil to flow elsewhere. Replace the saw dust every two weeks. The 210L barrel also has commercial value and may be sold independently. While collecting waste oil, it is ok to mix various types of oils (Petrol, Diesel, Mineral, Synthetic, Brake etc.)	Fluctuates from time to time with the oil price. Oil barrel can be sold separately.
2	Body Parts: Plastic & Metal	Safely stock in the waste parts area Parts that can be refurbished and reused shall be marked appropriately and stocked in the inventory area There are specialised buyers for body parts	Usually price is fixed by volume of material.
3	Oil & Fuel Filters	Number of oil filters must match the number of oil changes since last sale of filters Usually oil filters that have metal content have higher commercial value Stack used filters in a separate enclosed bin. Do not mix it with the waste oil Keep filters sealed at all times and away from exposure to heat, fire and other flammable materials	Oil Filters: Sold per oil filter depending on the size. Fuel Filters usually get a higher price due to higher metal content.
4	Tyres	Store in racks Sell to tyre scrap buyers when 20 or more tyres are available	Price varies depending on the size
5	Battery	Store in spares warehouse in a safe place away from exposure to heat, fire and other flammable materials Sell to battery suppliers when 10 or more are available	Varies depending on the size of the battery
6	Old service parts	Store in scrap area	Price fixed by volume of material
7	Engine oil barrels	Store in scrap area.	Valued per empty barrel depending on demand
8	Cotton waste	Store in a safe place away from exposure to heat, fire and other flammable materials Dispose of safely	N/A
